Manager Musings- May 25In cooperation with Republic Services, the City will take part in a pilot program related to solid waste collection. This program will be implemented (at no cost) to those residents north of Flint Street and west of State Street, which includes the following streets:
- N. Genesee Street (north of W. Flint Street)
- JFK Court
- Moore Street
- Charles Street
- Village Drive
- Meadow Drive
- Kay Street
- Oda Street
- Bay Street
- W. Hill Street
- Gary Ray Drive
- Leona Drive
- Maxine Drive
The documents here (which will also be provided to the affected residents) describe the program and the recyclable items, which have been significantly expanded. This program will run for approximately ten weeks. After a review of the surveys returned (residents, please complete and return the surveys to City Hall), the City and Republic Services will make a determination how to best proceed with the City's solid waste and recycling program. |  | Yard Waste CollectionDue to the lengthy relationship established between the City of Davison and Republic Services and after hearing the concerns of the City Council and several residents, yard waste will be collected on a WEEKLY basis rather than the every-other-week collection in conjunction with recycling. This weekly collection will continue until further notice.

| | 2010 Compost Site Due to two different factors, the City's Compost Site will not be opening this year. First, the City was notified as far back as 2006 that the use of park property acquired with the assistance of grant funding for compost operations did not meet the State's definition of "outdoor recreation," for which the grant funding was awarded. Failure to mitigate (remove) the compost operations from the park property, according to the State, could either jeopardize future grant awards or result in the City having to return the grant funds. This compliance with the State's directives is the primary reason for not opening the compost site. Another factor in this decision is the cost of compost operations, especially when considered in light of the City's current budget constraints. Seasonal laborers hired to staff the compost site and the cost of grinding and screening the brush have been eliminated from the proposed 2010-2011 budget. City staff is working with the City's solid waste hauler to begin collecting all yard waste from the curb of all residents. This collection should begin later this month.

| | Holiday Notices  Holiday closings for City offices for the remainder of the calendar year include Christmas Eve and Christmas Day (Dec. 24, 25), and New Year's Eve (Dec. 31; offices will also be closed on New Year's Day, Jan. 1, 2010).
Please also remember that you can discard your natural Christmas tree in one of two ways. The Public Works Department will collect unwrapped trees placed at the curb on Dec. 28-30, 2009, and again from Jan. 4-8, 2010. The City's compost site will be open from 8:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Jan. 4-8, 2010, for Christmas tree drop-off.
